Fontaine Saint-Bénigne
En quelques mots
The Saint-Bénigne Fountain bears the name of a saint who is well known in the region. Originally from Izmir in Turkey, he is said to have evangelised the towns of Autun and Langres and converted many pagans in Dijon in the 2nd century AD. To escape persecution by the Christians, he took refuge in Épagny and was arrested in 177 or 178 near the fountain that today bears his name. Martyred in Dijon, his tomb became a place of worship and pilgrimage. The cathedral of Saint-Bénigne now stands on his site in the city. Like his tomb, the fountain was once a place of devotion, where the sick came to draw water.
Today, the Saint-Bénigne fountain and its pond are a pleasant picnic spot.
